The artistic research project «Listening to Changing Shapes» focuses on the perception of dynamic moving shapes in aural space. The study explores the limits of our spatial hearing by transforming dynamic moving shapes into sonic material within a three dimensional aural space. The experience is created by combining an ambisonic surround space with a bone-conducted binaural space. This combination provides an intense spatial aural perception, where sound can not only move around the listeners head but also be perceived as moving through the head of the listener. Inspirations from other disciplines inform the definition of dynamic moving shapes. The aim was to achieve the most accurate auditory perception possible through an experimental approach and to evaluate the outcome through a participants study.
This project combines creative, empirical and technical methodologies and addresses the topic of transformative processes in scientific and artistic research.
