RAHEL ZIMMERMANN

Rahel Zimmermann works as a composer, sets films, theater, and installations to music, writes pieces for various ensembles, and creates acousmatic works, always with a focus on spatial sound.

Born in Glarus, Switzerland. Bachelor's degree in Architecture from ETH Zurich. She studied composition and theory, specializing in composition for film, theater and media at ZHdK with Peter Scherer and Germán Toro Pérez, Master's Degree in May 2019.

Recipient of a scholarship from the Hans Streiff Foundation in 2018, the Christoph Delz Foundation's Werkjahr grant for 2020 and a Werkjahr grant from the City of Zürich for contemporary composition in 2026. Nomination for the Netzhdk Alumni Prize 2022.

In 2021/22, she was a Junior Fellow at the Collegium Helveticum with the project Listening to Changing Shapes, an investigation of the perception of complex moving shapes in aural space. In 2024, she received a residency at Monom Studio in Berlin (4D Sound Studio).

She won the Best Original Music Award for a Short Film at the Annecy Festival 2022 for La Reine des Renards. In 2025, she was nominated for the Film Music Award at the music & cinema international festival in Marseille for the feature film Hanami and won the Zürcher Filmpreis 2026 for Best Sounddesign and Music for  the aninmation movie Gherking together with Peter Bräker.

Since 2024, she has been on the board of the IFMZ (Initiative Freie Musikszene Zürich). She is part of the collective sàd records.
